⑯Memorial of Tomamai Historic Trading Site(Tomamae, Tomamae)

This is one of the 4 trading sites which were established in this region, the other 3 being in Mashike, Rumoi and Teshio. The Suhara family, contractors for Tomamai, opened this site in 1804. Takeshiro Matsuura recorded details of his stay here in his travel journal.

⑰Garden Lantern at Tomamae Shrine(Tomamae Shrine, Tomamae)

This stone lantern was placed by Kakubei Suhara, who became the contractor for Teuri, Yagishiri in 1786, and also for Tomamae and Rumoi in the following year. The nearby lion dogs were dedicated in 1864 by the Suhara store.

⑲Monument to Mark the Site of the Shonai Tomamai Regional Government Office(Kagawa, Tomamae)

This is the site where the Shonai clan, which was under orders to protect Nishi-Ezo, established a regional government office.


⑳Monument to Commemorate the First Successful Rice Crop in Tomamae(Kagawa, Tomamae)

After much trial and tribulation, Mansukeou Fujita, a settler from Iwate prefecture, successfully grew rice at this location. This monument is dedicated to his achievements.


㉑Restored Site of the Sankebetsu Brutal Bear Attack(Sankei, Tomamae)

In 1915, a huge 350 kilogram bear attacked a village and killed 10 settlers in what was the most horrific attack by a wild animal in Japanese history. This replica conveys the terror of that attack.

㉔Monument of Usuya Benzaiten(Usuya, Obira)

This is thought to be the stone icon of Benzaisha which Takeshiro Matsuura wrote about in his travel journal. It is rare to find such icons from the mid Edo period. The plaque with it is inscribed with the name Denbei Murayama.
